Life InSight is committed to treating individuals with managing the complex experiences of trauma and grief. We help individuals process and adapt to the reality of the loss and find ways to move forward. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy emphasizing acceptance of negative thoughts and feelings, employing mindfulness to focus on the present moment, and encouraging commitment to values-aligned activities. We also utilize Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT); an evidence-based treatment designed to assist children, adolescents, and their parents in overcoming trauma-related difficulties and grief, offering essential skills to address stress, irritability, anger, and sadness stemming from traumatic events. The therapy helps children/adolescents identify and manage distorted beliefs, while also supporting caregivers in providing appropriate assistance and coping with emotional distress.
Trauma & Grief
Trauma and grief are complex experiences that can impact individuals differently. Trauma refers to the emotional, psychological, or physical distress resulting from experiences that are overwhelmingly distressing or harmful. These experiences can be singular events, such as accidents or acts of violence, or they can be prolonged situations like abuse or ongoing stress. Trauma can have a profound impact on an individual's mental and emotional well-being, often leading to symptoms such as anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Grief, on the other hand, is the natural response to loss, typically associated with the death of a loved one, but it can also be triggered by other significant losses, such as the end of a relationship or a major life change. Grief involves a range of emotional and physical responses, including sadness, disbelief, anger, and even physical symptoms like fatigue or changes in appetite.
Treatment
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that emphasizes acceptance as a way to deal with negative thoughts, feelings, symptoms, or circumstances. The goal of ACT is to embrace negative thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or feeling guilty and through the practice of mindfulness, focus on acceptance, compassion, and living in the present moment. It also encourages increased commitment to healthy, constructive activities that uphold an individual’s values. Another form of treatment is Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT); an evidence-based treatment that focuses specifically on helping children, adolescents, and their parents (or other caregivers) overcome trauma-related difficulties and grief. Treatment can be especially useful to target unique symptoms in youth who exhibit stress, irritability, anger, and/or sadness resulting from an earlier traumatic event or significant loss. TF-CBT helps children identify and recognize distorted or upsetting beliefs and learn skills to help them cope with daily stressors. In addition, therapists will often work directly with caregivers to not only help provide appropriate support to their children in such events but to help them cope with their own emotional distress.
